“Detect AI Deepfakes with Ease: Introducing Our New Chrome Extension”

2 minutes

Have you ever questioned the authenticity of a video or audio recording, wondering if it was created by AI to deceive you? Well, now there’s a solution for that. Hiya’s Deepfake Voice Detector is a Chrome browser extension that can detect AI-generated, deepfaked audio on various online platforms such as X/Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook. To use it, you need to create an account with a verified email address and grant access for each test. The extension focuses on audio to detect deepfakes, so videos without audio cannot be checked. Once you ask it to analyze a video playing on your active Chrome tab, the results will appear in the extension, along with your history of past checked content. The developer of Hiya states that they are releasing this tool to prevent political deepfakes from misleading viewers in the weeks leading up to the US federal election. Deepfakes of major political figures have already been extensively created, from President Biden robocalls earlier this year to Vice President Kamala Harris deepfakes and AI-generated images of Taylor Swift fans supporting Donald Trump. “At Hiya, we are dedicated to fighting against scams, fraud, and misinformation,” says Hiya President Kush Parikh. “Deepfakes are becoming increasingly difficult to detect, making it challenging to distinguish between real and fabricated content. While voice cloning is an incredible technological advancement, it is also being exploited by cybercriminals for scams and even to influence major events like elections.” PCMag tested the Hiya extension on various videos, including one where deepfakes of Trump and Biden engage in a conversation. The extension gave the video a 59/100 on its “Authenticity Score” and noted, “Our models are uncertain about this voice.” While this is somewhat reassuring, it would be better if the extension could determine with more certainty whether the video is a deepfake. However, it is often accurate. In a PCMag test, a real video of Elon Musk discussing cryptocurrency was correctly identified as “likely authentic” by Hiya. The extension also correctly identified obvious deepfakes of Musk and US Vice President Kamala Harris speaking with her running mate Governor Tim Walz, giving both videos low trust scores. It also identified a video of Will Smith criticizing Biden with 118,000 views as a deepfake, although some X users were fooled into thinking it was real. Additionally, it identified a video of a supposed former student of Walz’s and a video of Anderson Cooper as deepfakes.
